I’m Lucy, the new Marketing and Communications intern at York Cares, and I’m volunteering with the charity whilst I study English at the University of York. York Cares matches the skills and expertise of employee-volunteers to community projects where they can have the most impact. Having only started a few weeks ago, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind getting to grips with everything, but thankfully the brilliant team couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful – and the supply of biscuits has definitely made the whole process a lot easier!
October’s Big Community Challenge was my first real opportunity to see York Cares in action. This is a project that invites teams of employee-volunteers to spend a few hours rejuvenating different sites across York, from care homes to children’s playgrounds. The results were amazing and it was brilliant to see how many teams came to help out. Chatting to volunteers from the likes of Aviva and Yorkshire Bank, it was so insightful to hear about their long, fruitful relationships with York Cares and how they enjoy getting involved in their local community.
York Cares also runs York Children’s University scheme and this month sees the return of ‘CU in the City’, a series of free family events for children and their families hosted by local entrepreneurs and academics, with the aim to inspire children and to link real life experiences and learning.
I’m really looking forward to being a part of CU in the City, especially the event ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’ – I had no idea that York had it’s own beetle (the tiny Tansy), so I certainly can’t wait to hear what else there is to learn! It’s definitely not just the kids who can learn something new…
Now it’s November, it’s also definitely acceptable to start talking about my favourite time of year again, Christmas! The team is getting into the spirit already, eagerly looking for teams of volunteers to help support the elderly and people in need across the city. It’s just the start of what looks set to be a wonderfully busy season for us here and I look forward to becoming more involved in everything that’s going on.
