The Formal Launch of York Children's University

5.30-7pm, Monday 7 March 2011,

Aviva Board Room, Wellington Row, York, YO90 1WR

York Children's University is a nw and exciting collaboration between businesses, The University of York, York’s cultural providers, local schools and the communities they serve. We are delighted to be joined by the Chairman of York Cares, John Lister, the Chief Executive of The National Children’s University, Ger Graus, and the Chief Executive of City of York Council, Kersten England, who will be reflecting on what this means for the children of York.

Through this initiative we are seeking to inspire disadvantaged children aged 7-14 in learning through extra-curricular and out-of-school activities delivered by employee and student volunteers. It builds on the work of previous years during which over 400 children participated in innovative modules themed around The Science of Food, Travel and Transport, Money, The Media, Hospitality and Law and Justice, all run by volunteers. Through the goodwill of our employers, children have had the chance to announce the trains at Harrogate station, taste new food with executive chefs at ‘Come Dine with Me’, visit the law courts, see how a newspaper goes to print, dissect a take-away and visit the bank vaults.

We are inviting employers to work with us to expand existing modules and set-up new ones in areas such as Retail, Technology, Construction and Leisure. This is an opportunity for businesses to play an active part in their communities and support those who are most at risk, particularly in the challenging economic climate.
