Could you help primary school children engage with reading and improve their literacy?

Right to Read is a well established programme, providing one-to-one reading support for local primary school children. The programme has proved to be a very rewarding and popular volunteering opportunity. York Cares currently maintains over 60 volunteers, helping children in 17 primary schools across the city.

“To begin with some of the children were reluctant to read and would ‘forget’ their books. By the end of the year they were all without exception engaged in reading, understanding and enjoying the stories and delighted by their progress” Right to Read volunteer

Volunteers undertake placements in local schools across York and are asked to give a minimum commitment of one hour a week (or fortnight if they share a placement with another volunteer), for one academic term.  No experience is necessary, as York Cares will provide training, delivered by a local Deputy Head (formerly a  Literacy Consultant) which will demonstrate the recommended procedures for helping children to read.
