Hello from Katy Elliott!

Hi, I’m Katy! I am looking forward to starting my placement year with York Cares as a Volunteering Support Officer, where I will be looking after the Team Challenges program. This year will be my third at the University of York, where I am studying Politics with International Relations.

After graduating, I would love to work within the charities and not-for-profit sector, so this is an incredible opportunity for me to get a taste of working within this sphere. As a politics student, I have had the opportunity to see how and why community initiatives are so important, but working for York Cares will allow me to be part of those initiatives. In addition, pursuing a placement year has meant that I am able to apply skills I have already started to develop throughout my time at university, but also learn new ones.

There is no denying that it is a peculiar time to be starting a new role, in light of covid-19, but I feel very lucky to be working for an organisation which works to help the local community at a time where it is so necessary. I am especially looking forward to seeing how the Team Challenges program can breathe new life into spaces which have been invaluable over the last few months, whilst also providing an opportunity for colleagues and teams to connect whilst many places of work are not open.
