Make a Difference this Christmas: Guest Blog

The Women’s Housing project consists of six self-contained flats within a gated courtyard, and are primarily used by women fleeing domestic abuse. I support these women to move forward, providing accommodation and weekly sessions for up to two years while they rebuild their lives.

The majority of women I support have had to move across the country for their safety, so have only the bare minimum from their previous lives. They have limited or no contact with family and friends in some circumstances and with low income they are unable to buy anything other than essential items. I find the Christmas period can be a very difficult time for the women I support, as it can be very lonely and isolating.

The organisations that York Cares enlist to collect Christmas gifts for us is such a valuable resource. Without the generosity of these companies and their employees, most of the women I support would have nothing to open on Christmas Day.
In previous years we have been overwhelmed with the time and effort that has gone into providing gifts. Including lovely boxes of chocolates, hand selected scarves, beautiful toiletries, jewellery and more. The companies have really got into the spirit of things, either providing large Christmas bags or wrapping boxes making the presentation of the gifts feel all the more special.

The Women past and present have been touched by the kindness shown and I hope York Cares Christmas Collection can continue to grow year after year to help others that find themselves in situations beyond their control. However small you feel the gesture is, it will mean the world to someone else, and give them hope for their future.

Thank you and Merry Christmas
