Nestle host a careers focused day for college students
As part of our work in collaboration with Future HY, the National Collaborative Outreach Programme we recently worked with Nestle who hosted a day which aimed to inspire young people about possible futures and to empower them to succeed.
Wednesday 19 September saw 15 students from Selby College head to Nestle, prepared with their Golden Tickets, for a day packed with activities surrounding the topic of #nowrongpath. The day involved several activities delivered by a wide range of employees at Nestle, all of which had very different career paths which led them to where they were today.
The day started with a welcome and a short introduction into each employee’s journey, some who had been there since leaving school or college or some who had a several other jobs before moving to Nestle. One thing for sure is that they had all had very different journeys and not one of them was simple, all of them had a few bumps along the way.
The employees hosted a range of workshops about many different aspects of employability such as how to communicate with impact and how to recognise and follow your own values. Each workshop sparked some very keen interest and really got the pupils thinking about how they could apply these methods in situations throughout their career and in their upcoming placement interviews.
In the afternoon, the pupils took part in a networking session with Business Leaders who told their story on how they got to where they are. This activity gave the pupils the opportunity to ask each Business Leader questions to really get to know what they get up to within their job and the steps they took to get there. By the end of the session the pupils seemed to really value the fact that life is unpredictable and that so many opportunities arise when you least expect them. This really highlighted the theme that there is really no wrong path for them to take. One student from the college said, “’Life isn’t always what you plan to do but always be yourself” which in a nutshell, summarises the whole day.
The day drew to a close with a short presentation from the pupils on what they had learnt during the day, with almost all of them addressing the fact that they now knew so much more about the flexibility with careers (and that pink Kit-Kats exist!) It was amazing to see the difference just one day can make on a pupil’s outlook on their future so we would like to give a big thank you to Nestle for providing this fantastic opportunity for them.
This work was part of our Aspirations programme which seeks to bring the world of work to life by challenging young people with real-world problem-solving and empowering them to succeed. Volunteering as part of this programme is a great way to share your skills and sector with a group of young people inspiring them to aim higher and work harder. If you are interested in finding out more about our Aspirations programme, please get in touch.
