In 2023, the Big Community Challenge (BCC) focused on the maintenance and restoration of river and wetland areas in York, supporting a number of different sites and culminating in improving a section of the Foss Walk along Foss Islands. We identified river and wetland areas in the North, East, South and West of the city, linking to the city’s river heritage. Activities organised in these areas aimed to preserve and improve biodiversity in the city. All areas selected for this year’s BCC are in close proximity to freshwater habitats and tasks focused on preserving and improving these vital habitats for conservation. The BCC took place throughout the month of June across numerous sites in the city, including Chapman’s Pond, Rowntree’s Park, the University of York East Campus and along the Ouse and the Foss.
