5 Reasons we love being a small charity

This week is #SmallCharityWeek which is celebrating small charities across the UK. We are a small charity and we are taking the opportunity to share 5 reasons that we love being a small charity.

1. The size of the charity doesn’t determine the size of the impact

We currently have around 30 employer members and are committed to providing opportunities for all of their employees. Overall this equates to almost a quarter of York’s workforce. By working with so many employers and their employees, the collective difference that our members make in the community is huge. We definitely believe we are small but mighty!

2. Our work is directly involved in the local community

Being a small charity means that we are able to ensure that we focus all our efforts on our local community. Our aim is to work together to make York a better place and so all of the programmes that we run have local beneficiaries. This means that we can make sure we’re doing what we set out to do.

3. We really get to know our partners

We are a small charity which means we also have a small team. One of the results of this is that we are able to get to know our partners and build great relationships with them. If an employee-volunteer takes part in one programme over a period of time then because they will be working with the same member of our team we can continue to ensure that they get the most out of their employee-volunteering.

4. We can be flexible

Being small means that there is more scope to respond quickly to changing need both from the community but also from our employer members. We are able to constantly adapt our programmes to ensure that they are the best fit and we are also able to create bespoke opportunities based on community need. This is something that we are really proud of.

5. We have stood the test of time

This is more something that we are proud of as a small charity but York Cares has been around for over a decade which proves that the work we do is important and needed by our community.

As you can see, we love being a small charity and are very proud of our work. We hope that our employer members and employee-volunteers can continue making York a better place for many years to come.
