Celebrating British Science Week

This week we had a fantastic time welcoming 270 primary school pupils to the University of York Campus to celebrate British Science Week with some amazing activities put on by the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology.

Students from four different schools had a chance to participate in a session exploring the theme of space travel. Learning about robotic rovers landing on Mars, the students watched live coverage of a Mars landing. They then had a chance to design their own “space landing apparatus”. The mission: safely land a raw egg without breaking the shell.

The celebrations also showcased an action-packed demonstration lecture that addressed intriguing questions such as: how far is space, how do we get there, and what happens to our bodies when we do? The laws of physics were explored with exciting live demonstrations and a bang or two.

As one student expressed: “I want to be a scientist like her when I grow up. That was amazing!” We’ve had a wonderful jam-packed two days and learned a thing or two, including how to go to the toilet in space. We can’t thank the Physics and Engineering Outreach Team enough for facilitating these exciting sessions!

These activities were delivered as part of our Aspirations programme which aims to enable people from all backgrounds and abilities to reach their full potential.
