It’s National Befriending Week!

This week is National Befriending Week and the theme is Befriending for support. Our Social Connections programme aims to bring younger and older people together through meaningful connections to bridge the intergenerational divide and reduce loneliness and social isolation.

Evidence has shown that 36% of people in the UK feel lonelier since the pandemic; more than 50% want to feel more connected to their local community and 73% now recognise that a sense of community is important for wellbeing.

We have been working in partnership with City of York Council and The Cares Family, to adapt the latter’s existing proven model of intergenerational activity to suit the needs of York. By providing opportunities for younger and older people to share time, laughter, new experiences and friendship we aim to improve people’s connections and sense of belonging and thereby wellbeing.

Our Social Clubs bring together older and younger neighbours free to share time and new experiences, we have a programme of activities such as foraging walks, planting sessions, and we’ve even hosted a paint and prosecco evening. These activities are all designed to provide an opportunity for people to come together to offer each other social support and friendship.
On 12 December we’re hosting Shimmer and Shine, a festive social club where there will be carols, festive treats and much more and we are inviting older and younger neighbours from across the city to join us to bring festive cheer to everyone who attends. Although for many Christmas can be a busy time packed with shared meals and family gatherings, this isn’t the case for everybody. For some Christmas is a time of loneliness and isolation which is why we want to bring people together to have a shared experience and help to reduce loneliness and isolation over the festive season.
