What is Right to Read?

Right to Read is one of our oldest programmes which aims to boost literacy standards in the city. We place employee-volunteers from our member organisations in local schools, convenient to them, where they provide much needed one-to-one reading support for primary aged children.

‘I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Right to Read volunteering programme with York Cares. They placed me with a school close to where I live, so that I can start my volunteering session first thing, and be at my desk at work by 10.15am.’

All training is provided and the programme requires only a light level of commitment, an hour a week for one academic term, with the opportunity to increase participation in York Cares in the future.

‘I have the chance to read with children of mixed abilities and find that helping those who are struggling to read and getting the opportunity to listen to a child who loves to read equally rewarding. I would recommend this programme to anyone, I thoroughly enjoy it and always come back to the office refreshed and smiling’.
